French Wines. Classification
The celebrated wines of the Medoc, the Graves and Sauternais regions are classified, according to established rules and regulations authorized by the Boards of Trade and officials of the Government, into a number of different grades. These grades are called by the French name "crus," which literally means growth or rank. There are five recognized classes altogether. All wines that are classed in these families by the authorities which have been mentioned are known as "grand wines." The official classification of these wines is as follows:1
