The regions producing the Sauterne wines are also found chiefly on the left bank of the Gargonne above the Graves region. Some of the most celebrated wines of the world are made in this neighborhood and rank in reputation and in price with the First Grand Wines of the Medoc. The region of the Sauternais is a gently rolling one, with a gravely soil which has been in cultivation since historic times. The extreme care which is used in the cultivation of the vines would be a revelation to the American farmer and gardener. Each vine apparently receives as much attention as a favorite child would get in the family circle. The principal vineyards of the Sauternais are described below.
