This sewing box is large enough to contain all of the general sewing needs and also have room for keeping the material you will be working on. It is convenient to use, since you can easily carry this box around from place to place.

The kind of material you will want to use for making this model will to a great extent, depend upon how much you wish to spend; 1/4" plywood is very satisfactory to use.

Make this box about 15" long, about 12" high to the top of the handle and the ends about 7" wide at the bottom and 9" wide at the top. Allow the bottom piece to project beyond the sides and ends about

Method Of Procedure

Step No. 1: Lay out the two end pieces to the design shown.

Step No. 2: Bore holes in the end pieces, to receive the handle.

Step No. 3: Cut out the two end pieces to the correct shape and size.

Step No. 4: Cut out the two side pieces and glue and nail these to the end pieces.

Step No. 5: Cut out the bottom; glue and nail this in place.

Step No. 6: Carefully fit a piece across the top, connecting the two end pieces, so that the covers can hinge to this strip.

Step No. 7: Make two pieces for the covers; fit them in place with a little margin of freedom. Then put two hinges on each cover (hinges about 1"x1" in size).

Step No. 8: Glue a dowel in place for the handle. An old discarded broom handle can be made to fit and will serve very well.

Step No. 9: Thoroughly sandpaper all parts of the model with first No. 1/2 sandpaper and then with No. 00 sandpaper. Use a scrap block of some kind to fold the sandpaper over so as to insure flat surfaces free from waves and irregularities. Always rub with the grain. The final sandpapering should be done by holding the sandpaper in the palm of the hand and slightly rounding all sharp corners.

Step No. 10: Clean off all sawdust with a soft brush and then apply the finish. You can finish this project to imitate mahogany or walnut. Apply the stain you prefer, allowing at least eight hours for it to dry; then follow by applying at least three coats of white shellac. Rub gently between coats with No. 00 sandpaper or steel wool. The last coat should be rubbed with pumice stone powder and crude oil.
