This section is from the book "Furniture A Girl Can Make", by William W. Klenke. Also available from Amazon: Furniture A Girl Can Make.
This boudoir bench is a companion piece to the dressing table, shown elsewhere, which with the dressing table mirror, makes up an attractive useful group for the girl's room.
As with the dressing table, this project can be made by using an old discarded packing case. Of course, if you so prefer, use new lumber. Be sure that the box is made of wood about 7/8" thick so as to be strong enough to hold as a seat.
You should try to get a case that will be about 14" x 18" x 16". The 16" represents the height which will be increased to 18" when the padding is put in place.
Care should be exercised not to have the ruffle of the skirt come up too high on the seat part, as this may interfere with your comfort when using this bench.
Step No. 1: Remove the section of the case you intend having for the bottom of the bench. Now securely nail up all sides, making certain that no nails project beyond the surfaces. If the top seems a bit frail, reinforce this by nailing an extra piece in place on the under side of the top piece.

Step No. 2: Heavily pad the top with sheet cotton or any other suitable padding material such as is used in upholsterer's work. The padding should be made higher in the center and tapered off towards the sides and ends in a graceful curved line. Cover this padding with a piece of heavy unbleached muslin or odd material you may have on hand. The muslin must be drawn down firmly and securely tacked.
Step No. 3: Now fasten your covering material in place by stretching it tightly and tacking it along the edges. Be sure to turn the material in so as to prevent fraying. The tacks should be spaced about apart and placed far enough down on the sides so that the ruffles of the skirt will cover any tack heads.
If you want to make a still better job, run a little cotton padding around the entire case; this will take away the hard wood feeling and give the effect of a completely upholstered piece of furniture.
