A shoe for horses, consisting of a plate of iron of a circular form. Horse-shoes are necessary as a protection to the foot on stony or hard roads, and they vary in size, shape, and strength according to the formation of the foot and the kind of work the horse has to perform. They were formerly all made by the hand, and many still are, but machinery is now largely employed in their manufacture. Modern farriery requires light, small shoes, with few nails, and that the shoe be put on without overheating, which is cruel, and injures the horn.
