A hard, jet-black variety of coal which burns with a bright white flame. The gas yielded by this coal has nearly three times the illuminating power of that obtained from common coal. It is hard enough to be cut and polished like jet, and is sometimes made into trinkets. In Scotland it is known as parrot coal.
