The entire circuit had apparently been disrupted as a result of a birth injury. Lynda's mother recalled that her baby arrived in the world with her head bent backward, in fact, a support collar was contemplated but never actually worn. The birth had taken place rather suddenly before the arrival of the doctor. A large bruise and bump was noted at a centre point on the baby's forehead just above the nose. The bruise was apparent for a long time after birth and was located at the site of an important wave receptor associated with the hearing. For many years Lynda had no sense of smell, but it developed gradually throughout her "teens"; however, she still lacked the control of reflexes that would permit her to blow her nose.
Prior to correcting the wave pattern in the receptors, I tested Lynda's ability to perceive sound. She gazed out the window watching the sea and mountains, entirely unconscious of my presence as I stood three feet behind her and yelled, shouted and whistled; there was no response. The sounds of my voice fell on deaf ears.
The preliminary steps necessitated the cancelling of the foreign wavelengths introduced by X-rays and the repolarizing of the bone structures affected. While taking out the head X-rays I specifically tapped about the nose, sinus cavities and around the ears. This was done having in mind the deficiencies of the nose reflexes. Lynda was extremely alert and co-operative throughout the necessary manoeuvres. Before she left for home that first day, the reflexes of the young girl's nose had assumed their proper magnetic pattern and she had gained the ability to blow it in a normal manner for the first time in the eighteen years of her life.
The introduction of her own polarized magnetic waves into the receptor cells of the many auditory neurons was a long and tedious job; a task which involved numerous sessions spread over a period of many weeks. At each session a few more disturbed receptors were marked and singled out for specific wave polarizing and each brought further gains and encouragement. In polarizing the neurons at the front and back of the head it was required of Lynda to face two directions only, i. e., first into her channel and then in the opposite direction. The neurons on the side of the head required four different positions, i. e., first facing into her channel, then a turn of 90 degrees, then 180 degrees, and finally 270 degrees.
After polarizing there is generally a period of fifteen minutes to one-half hour before improvement becomes apparent. During this interval, following the first treatment, Lynda indicated to us her ears felt itchy and were buzzing. She realized something strange was taking place as she repeatedly shook her head, remarking as she pointed to her ears, "Funny! " After the waiting period we hopefully tested the young girl for possible gains. Lynda was seated, with her mother and myself a few feet away on opposite sides and slightly behind her back. In these positions we were out of her vision as we tested with our voices for her reactions.
I raised my voice to a fairly high key and projected the sound with considerable volume. Lynda was visibly startled; she turned her head sharply towards me with her large brown eyes wide in amazement and pointed to her ears, repeating in her monotone, "I hear! I hear! " Treatment of the first group of neurons had broken the sound barrier! Lynda was still deaf, but the fact we had progressed from nothing to a limited degree of hearing was more than significant to the three of us.
Her mother projected her voice in a high key and Lynda swung around to her in a similar startled manner. This time she pointed from her mother to myself, commenting, "Different. " Not only could she hear the voices but she could detect the difference in our voices. Her mother assured me repeatedly that in Lynda's entire eighteen years of silent life, she had never been able to hear a voice before without the use of a hearing aid and even then could not interpret the sounds without lip reading.
That night she amused her mother by saying, "You laugh too loud. " Lynda was born with a delightful personality and a good sense of humour; her parting comment to her parents as she turned into bed, "Don't make too much noise. " The remark was made in jest by a gay and happy young girl who was experiencing a real awareness of her ability to hear for the first time.
Not having heard voices before, the sounds Lynda now heard were new, strange and confusing; she must learn to associate the sounds before she could learn to talk. The first session she was taught to differentiate between the two words "one" and "duck".
At the next session, three days later, the previously polarized neurons were checked; four had retained their correct magnetic pattern but three others had to be reinstated. In addition, two more were polarized bringing the circuit up to nine activated neurons associated with the ears. Three more words were added to the vocabulary, "father", "bath", and "Lynda", but they had to be megaphoned into her ear before she could distinguish them - the centre part of each ear still had a disturbed wave motion.
During the third session concentration of energy wave flow was stimulated from the outside centre of the ears. As a result Lynda now heard her own voice for the first time in her life. This had a tremendous reaction and brought forth repeated comments to myself and others, "First time I hear my own voice". She emphasized her accomplishment with animated gestures pointing to her mouth and ears.
