If you are a lover of dogs and wish to furnish your pet with a comfortable bed, I suggest to you the making of this simple box-bed.

Use any soft workable wood, such as you can obtain from an old discarded packing box that is made of thick lumber.

The size you will make this bed will depend, of course, entirely on the size of your dog. For a medium size bed, a space about 28"x32" or a little smaller will be found ample. A simple way to determine this size is to measure the space your pet occupies when he takes a little nap on the floor. The back should be about a foot high.

Method Of Procedure

Step No. 1: Cut out the two side pieces with a graceful curve towards the front of the bed.

Step No. 2: Cut out the back and front pieces.

Step No. 3: Nail the two side pieces to the back and front pieces with common wire nails about 2" long.

Step No. 4: The bottom can be either made out of solid wood, or you can first nail strips across the sides and on these strips tack upholsterer's webbing. Run the webbing in both directions. This type of construction will make a softer bed than a hard wooden bottom and will have more spring to it.

Dog Box Bed

Step No. 5: Make a small mattress out of some old heavy muslin or other suitable material and stuff out the inside with straw or cotton.

Step No. 6: Paint the entire wooden bed with at least two coats of oil paint. If you want to add a little sentimental touch to this box-bed, paint in the name of your dog on the head piece.

The mattress should be placed in the box so that it can be removed frequently for airing and cleaning. When the mattress becomes badly soiled, it is best to make a new one.

This box-bed will, of course, be suitable for a pet cat if you have such a pet.
