If one crosses the Rhine at Mannheim he reaches Ludwigshafen, in the Bavarian Rheinpfalz. This is the region of Southern Germany, in the broad valley of the upper Rhine, extending over the area embraced by the towns of Odenwald and Schwarzwald on one side and Haardtgebirge and Vogesen on the other side. The Haardtz mountains bound this region upon the west. It is a wonderful extent of landscape of great beauty, where the land is level and fertile. The towns are numerous and prosperous and the vineyards some of the best known. Among the principal towns noted for their wine in the Rheinpfalz are Forst, Deidesheim, Neustadt, Wachenheim, Durkheim and Landau. The wines of the Rheinpfalz are marketed chiefly from Ludwigshafen, Mannheim and Frankfurt am Main.
