This process was continued with such vigor as to threaten the very existence of the springs. In order that they might be saved, the area in which they existed was acquired by the State of New York. The State put a stop to the waste of water and gas, limited the output of water, which could be taken only under conditions prescribed, converted the area into a state park, beautified and improved it, and thus saved for future generations both the therapeutic and esthetic effects of the springs. Under the wise conservation of the State authorities the water level is rapidly rising. Springs which had ceased to flow are beginning to yield their waters again. The rape of the gas for commercial purposes has been stopped. It is probable that within a few years all of these springs will be restored to their pristine vigor.
