The region producing these wines covers a stretch of land northeast of Libourne in the angle formed by the Dordogne and its tributary the Isle. Its most celebrated vineyard is Chateau Ausone. This is thought to be the country seat of Ausonius, the Latin poet who praised the wines of the vicinity in his verses. The town of Saint Emillion is of great historic and architectural renown. Chateau Figeac is one of the most beautiful in the country. The territory of the Saint Emillion wines embraces five communes. There are more than 60 vineyards that produce first-classed wines.
