Under the old law it was a practice even with some of the larger houses to ship under well-known brands large quantities of wine which not only did not come from the district, the name of which was chosen, but was quite different in character, and needless to say, inferior in quality.
The enforcement of the present law (passed 1909) is guaranteed by holding the proprietor responsible for all violations, and all intentional violation is punishable by imprisonment.
