A very large industry is now established in this country in the manufacture of unfermented juice of the grape. The ease with which this unfermented juice may be pasteurized or sterilized and kept indefinitely has caused the business to grow rapidly in magnitude. Localities in which grape juice is manufactured are widespread, but especially is the business conducted on a large scale in the State of New York. There are many areas in this state suited to grape culture, and especially a narrow strip of land extending along Lake Erie from near Buffalo to Erie. This locality is peculiarly suited to the growth of grapes and without doubt is the best grape region on the East side of the Rocky Mountains. In Ohio there is a like region of excellent grape land, especially near Sandusky. Other important areas for the manufacture of grape juice are California and, to a limited extent, New Jersey. The variety of grapes employed is rather extensive, but the principal varieties are Catawba, Norton, Clinton and Concord.
