Holland is still the center of the gin industry and probably the best and most genuine products are made in that country. The town of Schiedam is the principal city of manufacture. It is a common practice in this country to represent gins as Hollands or Old Toms, and the courts unfortunately have permitted manufacturers and dealers to use this form of deception provided they will plainly state on the label that the article is manufactured in the United States. This is only condoning misbranding, since it is not at all necessary for the purchaser to look at the bottle. He is therefore deceived regarding the origin of the beverage which he buys.

Magnitude Of The Industry

The quantity of gin produced in the United States in 1916 was 4,118,064 gallons, made chiefly in the Fifth Illinois District - viz.: 1,002,995 gallons and in the First Ohio District viz.: 506,562 gallons. The quantity of gin imported in 1915 was 711,669 gallons valued at $696,636 (tax free).

The total product of the United States in 1917 was 5,756,666.8 gallons. The importation of gin into the United States is forbidden by the war legislation.
