In some instances the original method of making beer, namely: by the fermentation of the mash of cereals without the addition of any hops is still practised. In Germany a beer is made called Weiz Bier, which contains no hops, and is said to be made from wheat, hence its name. It is a very common practice in Germany to serve the Weiz Bier in a large vessel, which like a loving cup is passed around the table. It is used very largely at family, social and other intimate gatherings. Beer without hops is not known at all, or at least but little, in this country. I have never seen a sample of American beer brewed without hops.
