Deciduous shrubs parasitic on roots of surrounding plants. Twigs rather large, terete, pubescent when young; pith large, rounded. Buds ovoid, brown. Leaf-scars alternate, rounded; bundle-traces 3; stipules none. In addition to the leaf-scars, there are conspicuous branch-scars, formed by self-pruning of young twigs, in which the bundle-traces are numerous, in an ellipse.

1. P. pubera Michx. Buffalonut. A straggling or erect much-branched shrub 1-4 m.high, with terete twigs. Rich woods, mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia to Georgia and Alabama (Fig. 91).
