A square-stemmed plant 2 - 3 feet high, found in moist ground, especially near streams, from New England west and south; also cultivated in gardens.

Flowers

Scarlet, 2-lipped, clustered in terminal heads, with a number of leaflets below.

Leaves

Opposite, toothed, dark green, aromatic. Plant stem hairy.
