O. vulgare: stems erect, 1-2 feet high, hairy; leaves stalked, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, slightly toothed; flowers purplish, rarely white, in globular compact heads, forming a terminal trichotomous panicle. - Edges of woods, and hilly pastures, especially in limestone districts. Fl. July, August.
