E. vulgare: biennial; stems erect, 1-2 feet high, with stiff, almost prickly hairs; leaves lanceolate, stalked, those of the stem linear-lanceolate; flowers showy, reddish purple, turning to bright blue, in numerous one-sided spikes, forming a long terminal panicle; corolla limb very oblique. - Roadsides and waste places. Fl. June, July.
