L. communis: animal; stem 1-3 feet high, with stiff hairs at the base, branched and glabrous upwards; leaves hairy, lyrate, the terminal lobe ovate, coarsely-toothed, upper ones narrow, entire; flower-heads on slender peduncles, in a loose panicle or corymb, yellow; involucre of about eight nearly equal scales. - A common weed. Fl. July, August.
