In soft marshy ground of great depth, a foundation of fascines is frequently employed in places where suitable brushwood is plentiful, in Holland for instance; and in such places it is highly approved of. Its recommendations appear to be that when carefully made it is elastic, durable, and uniform. Authorities differ as to the best size of fascine for foundations; Paisley recommends 6 in. diam.; Lewis used them 12 in. diam. successfully.
