Put 101b. of logwood and 31b. of bruised galls in 3 gal. of water; boil for two hours, and strain. Place the .oat in the dye, and allow it to remain for half an hour. Take it out, and add about 21b. of copperas. Replace the garment, and boil till the dye has thoroughly impregnated it; the time this will take depends on, among other things, the quality and original colour of the coat. Remove it. and hang up for an hour; then rinse it twice, or three times, in cold or slightly warmed water, and dry. Sometime, a garment requires a second or a third dipping. Finish by pressing into shape. Common or old cloth will not stand much boiling, and pure woollen goods have to be treated with extreme care.
