Bracelets and chains can be made from buttons. String them on round hat elastic then they can be slipped over the head or hand-and in this way you will need no fastener.

If you have an assortment of buttons, you can make a flower garden by sewing them on stiff paper. Use colored yarn to sew them, and for the leaves and stems. Or if you prefer, you can sew them on with white thread, and paste pieces of green paper on the picture to make the leaves and stems.

Tell your fortune-Do you know how to tell your fortune with the buttons on your clothes? Count them out in this order, and the word given for the last button will be what you are to become:

"RICH MAN, POOR MAN, BEGGAR MAN, THIEF, DOCTOR, LAWYER, MERCHANT, CHIEF."

Whistles To Make

Spring is the time to make a willow whistle. It must be made when the bark is moist and the sap is running through the tree. Cut a willow stick 6 or 7 inches long, and at one end smooth off a place for your lips to go. Then notch a piece in the top-two inches from the mouth end. Now because the bark must come off-all in one piece, tap the sides lightly to loosen it, and soak it in water. As it begins to slide, push it down to the end of the stick. While the bark is off, cut a groove in the wood of the stick from the mouth end to the notch. Slide the bark on again.

Try it and see if it will whistle. It may take a little more cutting (in the same places), before it works right. Be sure to keep the whistle wet, for as soon as it dries it will not whistle.

A very good whistle can be made from a dried cornstalk. (You know a cornstalk is hollow.) Cut a slit in the stalk, like the one in a willow whistle, but do not remove the slit piece. Push it down into the whistle to make a plug.

Try using a hollow key for a whistle. Some of these keys make a very sharp noise when you blow in them.
