Some winter day when there is a heavy crust on top of the snow, hunt up an old tin tray or dish pan, and use it for a sled. Be sure to take a hill that is free from trees because there is no way to steer this kind of sled-except by wriggling your feet, and this does not help much. You will find the sled spins around as you slide down the hill.

Have you ever walked on tin can stilts? Try it sometime. All you need is two tin cans the same size- the larger the better, and some strong string. Make a hole on each side of each can. Put the string through these holes and tie the two ends of each string high enough up to reach your hand. Slip your foot between the two pieces of string, and rest it on the top of the can. Hold the ends of the knotted string in your hand. With one of these cans on each foot, and holding the string tight in each hand, try walking around. You will have to keep the strings pulled very tight or the cans will not lift with your feet.

Playing With Toothpicks

If you have modeling clay, toothpicks will help you make your figures. Use them for arms and feet and tails; for windows and doors; or just for sticks to model with.

See if you can build a house of sticks-like the little pig in the story. Make it as tall as you can without having it tumble over. Start by putting two sticks down on the table and laying two more across these. Keep piling these in this way and see how high you can make the house.

Stand a milk bottle on the floor an arm's distance from you. Now see how many toothpicks you can drop in the bottle without moving either foot. You may lean over but do not move your feet.

Things To Do With A Mirror

Have you ever tried to catch the rays of the sun and reflect them to some spot with.a mirror? Use a little pocket mirror, and see how far you can flash the light.

When you pick flowers, put the vase that holds them in front of a mirror. It makes a small bunch look much larger-as if you had double the number of flowers.

Stand in front of a mirror with a pad of paper and a pencil. Try to draw a picture by looking only at the paper in the mirror. You will find this very difficult, as what you see is backward from what you are doing.

This message is written with the letters facing backward. Hold it up to a mirror and you will find it turned the right way around.

Things To Do With Straws

Do you know how to make snakes from the paper wrappers on soda fountain straws? Just tear off one end of the cover, rest the other end of the straw upright on the table, and sliding your fingers down the straw, crush the wrapper to the bottom end. Lift out the straw, and you will have a snake. Now if you would like to make it wriggle, put a drop of water on the crushed paper, and your snake will squirm.

Catching fish with straws is a good game to play-alone or in a group. Cut out some small fish, using as thin paper as you can find. Put them in a pile on the floor. Take a straw, and sucking through it, see if you can hold one fish on the end long enough to walk across the room with it. Drop it and start another pile there. Only one fish is allowed on the straw at once, so if you suck up several, they must be put down again. To play this game with a group of people, have as many piles as you have players. If a fish is dropped on the trip across the room, it must be picked up again. The one who succeeds in transferring his fish from one pile to another wins the race.
